My Running Days Are Over

Yesterday I participated in my favorite local event - The Baltimore Running Festival!!  This was my 5th time running the half marathon, and my second time running the Baltimoronathon! That is where you run the 5K first thing in the morning, then run the half marathon about an hour and a half after you finish the 5K. And Baltimore is FULL OF HILLS.  FULL. I had forgotten about those hills!! Yesterday I also met the mayor of Baltimore.

Earlier this year I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis and have a bone spur on my left patella. It does get aggravated when I run. I do run intervals of walking some, then running some. Although I think it's more of a trot or shuffle when I run. I am not fast LOL! But that bone spur grabs that tendon and hurts real bad. Yesterday, I did my intervals and was feeling so very good. Up until the halfway point. Then the knee said "no more." So I walked the remainder of the half marathon.

So after I started walking I went through all sorts of emotions and thoughts about my future in run events. I finally let that all go, and once I did, I just began to have fun. The people of Baltimore come out all across the city to cheer the runners on. So I had fun with them, and was happy to see some of my favorites still coming out: The "Beer Stop" around mile 10, The Eye of the Tiger couple, and all the people who brought out their dogs!!!  Thankfully, Baltimore has a 5 hour time limit for the half marathon.  I finished in 4:10. The longest it has ever taken me to do a half.

So, now what? Well, I go back to my doctor to get rechecked. I would very much like another shot in the knee to help now. But it looks like any half with a strict time limit is out for me now. I do have a marathon in June, but The Hatfield McCoy does not have a time limit, so I will work on walking in my marathon training. If anyone has any pointers on how to increase your walking pace, please send it to me!!

I have been blessed to have been able to run in some amazing places. A 10K in Richmond Park in London. Half marathon in Montreal. Honolulu Marathon (no time limit for those who are worried about time!!!), running on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway twice, and numerous runDisney events on both coasts of the USA. And these events are not over for me. Lots of events have 5 and 10Ks. And I'm going to continue to do those because I know I can. And I do plan on creating a Baltimore Marathon Relay team with my Star Wars mates next year. Heck, we may end up with enough people to do more than one team!!

I love the half marathon. I have done 2 full marathons, and 18 half marathons. And that is more than most people will ever do in their entire life. I have been blessed to even be able to do this. It's been a great run!!
